Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
